MARY: A MODEL OF COURAGE FOR THE PRESENT AND A BEACON OF HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

We are inspired by the life of Mary the Mother of Jesus and the model of true discipleship. She always leads us to her son in whom we find the fullness of life. “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5) she instructs us just as she did during the wedding feast at Cana. Following this advice resulted in the miracle of abundant wine and the avoidance of embarrassment for the newlywed. Carmelites have always known that no one who turns to Mary will ever be disappointed.

To us Carmelites, Mary is a loving mother and a beloved sister. She understands our pains and sufferings and shares in our joys. She had to struggle with much pain and loss in her own life – the loss of her faithful and caring husband Joseph and the brutal murder of her beloved son, Jesus (John 19:26-27). She wrestled with knowing the will of God to which she was totally committed, and the fears and doubts that could be involved (Luke 1:34). In all this, her one desire was total commitment to the divine will to which she gave her fiat, “Let it be done to me according to your will” (Luke 1:38). So, she stands in a position to understand our struggles, our fears and doubts, our pains and sorrows, as well as our joys and dreams and hopes. We Carmelites understand this and to us she is God’s gift to us. Indeed, the Queen Beauty of Carmel!
